Recovering From Plastic Surgery

18 Jul. 2012 Posted by Plastic Surgery... in recovering from plastic surgery

Though plastic surgery nowadays is generally much easier to recover from than in its early days, it is still important for you to be aware of yourself and your limitations following plastic surgery. Depending on the procedure, you may experience swelling, bruising, or other effects when recovering from your surgery. Such occurrences are absolutely normal. However, without careful consideration, these normal "side effects" of surgery can potentially cause major complications. Additionally, the desired outcome of your surgical procedure can actually still be altered while you're in recovery. In order to have a healthy recovery that produces the best post-surgical results, be sure to follow all of your doctor's instructions. For some examples of what these instructions might include, read on.

Keep Clean

Recovery

One of the most common instructions patients receive after any type of surgery is to keep the surgical area and any other wounds or incisions clean. Many plastic surgeries require incisions, even if they are very tiny. With any incision or break in the skin, there is a risk for infection. Your doctor will give you specific cleaning instructions for your wounds. Follow these instructions to the dot. Not cleaning your wounds at all may lead to an infection. Cleaning wounds ineffectively or with the wrong materials may also contribute to potential infections.

Stay in the Shade

After certain surgical procedures, it may be in your best interest to keep out of direct sunlight while you are still recovering. The sun causes your skin to undergo changes and produce certain chemicals. While your body is healing, direct exposure to sunlight may cause the chemical make-up of your skin to change around exposed incisions. Sometimes, this change will be permanent. This may result in an uneven skin tone surrounding impacted areas. You may want to stay out of the sun as much as possible in the time immediately following your procedure and wear a wide-brimmed hat when going outside.

Reduce Bruising and Swelling

Bruising and swelling are common complaints during the recovery process following most common surgical procedures. Patients can reduce the amount of bruising and swelling they experience by putting ice packs on problem areas. Patients should ensure that the packs are of an appropriate temperature when placed next to human skin in order to prevent further complications. Recovering patients also should not put too much stress on areas that are experiencing bruising and swelling.

A Successful Recovery

Following all of your doctor's orders should result in a successful recovery from your surgical procedure. After recovering, you can look forward to living the life of your dreams with your new improved body. Just make sure that you take care of yourself while recovering to ensure your desired results. Once you have fully recovered, you will be glad that you took the extra time to appropriately care for your body after your procedure.
