Liposuction

Liposuction Plastic Sugery

Liposuction is a medical and cosmetic procedure that involves the removal of excessive fat deposits from various regions of the body. Examples of body areas where liposuction can successfully address the excessive fat problem include the abdomen, thighs, hips, back, upper arms, under the chin and the breasts. Liposuction is the most effective procedure that solves the problem of fat deposits when a low-fat diet and regular exercise have failed to address the situation. After a liposuction, weight gain is still possible, but not in the area where the excessive fat was removed. An experienced doctor will determine the amount of fat that will be removed from a specific body area depending on several factors because extracting too much fat may have negative health effects.

The liposuction technique consists of several steps. First, the doctor will use a general or local anesthetic to relieve pain, and may decide to give you a sedative to reduce anxiety. He or she will then proceed by making a very small incision through which a hollow tube, also known as a cannula, is inserted. It will be attached to a suction device that will alter fat tissue cells and will extract the fat in a gentle manner. Depending on the technique of choice, a special liquid or additional ultrasound or mechanical devices may be used to facilitate fat removal and improve effectiveness. Liposuction is a safe procedure with minimal associated side effects when done by an experienced plastic surgeon. Adverse effects and complication are rare and temporary, and may include swelling, bruising or an allergic reaction.

It is important to discuss your medical history with your surgeon and inform him or her of any medical conditions or prescription drugs that you may be taking. Your plastic surgeon may advise you to stop blood thinner medications used for heart disease treatment prior to the surgery to reduce the risk of bleeding. Also, an antibiotic is usually given before liposuction to minimize the chances of an infection.
